In Greek mythology, Psyche is the personification of the human soul. She is the protagonist of a famous story written by Lucius Apuleius in his novel "The Golden Ass."
According to the story, Psyche was a mortal woman who was so beautiful that she was admired by the goddess Aphrodite, who became jealous of her beauty. Aphrodite ordered Cupid, the god of love, to make Psyche fall in love with the most grotesque mortal.
Instead, Cupid fell in love with Psyche himself and visited her secretly in the night. But Psyche was not allowed to see Cupid and when her sisters convinced her to see him, he flew away and left her alone.
Psyche then went on a journey to find Cupid and win back his love. She went through many trials and obstacles, but eventually, she succeeded in winning back Cupid's love and they were married.
The story of Psyche and Cupid is often interpreted as a representation of the human soul's search for love and self-knowledge. Psyche's journey symbolizes the soul's journey to find its true self and the ultimate union of the soul with the divine.
Today, the word "psyche" is commonly used to refer to the human mind or soul and has been adopted into the field of psychology.
