In the story, Pwyll is said to have encountered Arawn, the lord of the otherworld, in a hunting expedition. Arawn had a problem with an enemy, Havgan, and Pwyll offered to swap shapes and defeat Havgan in his place. Pwyll succeeded in killing Havgan and Arawn, in gratitude, gave Pwyll the kingdom of Annwn, the otherworld, for a year and a day.

Pwyll's story is an important one in Welsh mythology and literature, and it is often used to symbolize the power of wisdom, generosity, and courage in overcoming adversity. It is also an example of the motif of the "Otherworld Journey", a common theme in Celtic mythology.
